Yang Shu

Yang Shu, born in Chongqing, graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, oil painting department with a master‘s degree in 1988.Then he worked as a professor in the institute. He spent one year doing research in Amsterdam Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Netherland 1995. Yang Shu is one of the early explorers of China’s experimental paintings. Since the mid-1980s, Yang Shu began to experiment on non-realistic paintings. During that period, he carried on the exploration and practice of various art styles and forms since Western Modernism, finally forming his unique abstract expressionism painting. In recent years, Yang Shu’s has immersed more and more graffiti elements into his works, expecting to find a new possibility in an anti-painting way.

In 1989, he has attended “Chinese Avant-garde Art Exhibition”, which was hosted by The National Art Museum of China. His works have also been presented in many public institutions including Shanghai Art Museum, Guang dong Museum, Zhang jiang Museum of Contemporary Art, etc., presented in many galleries in China, Europe, Australia and North America, and also been collected by many art institution sand private collectors. In the meanwhile, as an arts patron and curator, in 2006, together with Ni Kun, Yang Shu founded the famous non-profit institution Organ·haus, which has become the most dynamic and international contemporary art field in Southwest China.
