Born in Chongqing in 1955, She graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1983 with a Bachelor of Fine Art, going on to study in the Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and the China National Academy of Arts from 1985 to 1987. She graduated from the University of Tsukuba in 1993 with an MFA in Japanese Painting. From 1993 to 1996, Xiong Wenyun worked as a guest researcher at the Asakura Naomi Research Laboratory of Bunkyo University in Japan.

From 1998 to 2001, she produced a large experimental art project called Moving Rainbow, then created the Kongkong series before commencing research and practice of children’s art and education.

In 2020, while caring for her ailing mother, she began to record things around her on the back of used medicine boxes from her mother’s medical regimen. For three years after her mother was discharged from the hospital, she created the Hospital series, the Arrow series, and the Medicine Box series. In her decades of artistic practice, her works have been deeply influenced by her early experience of going to the countryside in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang areas. Themes of humanity and nature, as well as the cycle of life and death, have always been important to Xiong Wenyun. Her works encompass a wide range of media, including painting, installation, performance, and mixed media. Xiong has participated in important exhibitions such as the 2021 Chengdu Biennale, the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field Triennial in Japan, and A Thousand Rainbows Solo Exhibition of Xiong Wenyun in Shenzhen. Her works are prized by collectors worldwide.

Using a variety of media including performance, painting, video, and writing, her artwork explores memory, dreams, and the subconscious workings of the human psyche. Her works address gender, identity, and ecology in meaningful and nuanced ways.

Her prolific and constantly evolving body of work has been exhibited in art museums throughout the world, such as at the National Museum of World Culture (Världskulturmuseet, Gothenburg, Sweden) and the Bonn Women’s Museum (Germany). Li also participated in the Toronto Biennial of Art in Canada and the China-Europe International Art Biennale of Prague.

Her works have been collected by the Museum of East Asian Antiquities (Östasiatiska museet, Stockholm, Sweden), Teda Contemporary Art Museum, as well as by collectors in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and Singapore. She has also been honored by United Nations Women, and her academic articles have been published in National Arts and Oriental Art: Masters.

Li Xinmo curated the feminist art exhibition Heterogeneous Body, Performance Art and Postmodern Theater Series: Workshops at UCCA in 2017, Map and Territory international art exhibition in 2018, and Deutschland-Deutsche Kunst in China at the German Embassy in 2019.

Song Chen was born in Luoyang in 1979 and has been living in Shanghai since 2003.

Song Chen is an Eastern eco-artist creating contemporary art with earthen soil as her primary medium. Locality is extremely important to Song Chen’s work, as the artist considers her locality as a spiritual home from where she can focus on the ultimate destination of human evolution. Her prolific performative praxis has created several happenings and installations using soil, ink, and other natural materials through which she seeks to address the human heart as her partner in dialogue. Her soil-based creations utilize a variety of artistic forms, including installation, performance, video, and mixed media.

Song Chen’s soil-based artworks have been exhibited at Art Hong Kong, Art Basel HK, Shanghai Art Fair, ART021 Contemporary Art Fair in Shanghai, and West Bund Art Design in Shanghai. Among them, Walking Landscape Series I and Walking Landscape Series II have been collected by Yuz Foundation, and the Dust to Dust series has been collected by the Princess of Uzbekistan.

Li Yaoyao was born in Chengdu in 1994. She graduated from Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 2017, going on to study at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, where she received her MFA degree in 2021. She now lives and works in Chengdu and Chongqing.

Li Yaoyao is the youngest artist in this exhibition, with her works covering performance, installation, video, and poetry. Li focuses on the transformation and extension of her physical environment into a spatiality that is simultaneously containing and being contained. She also encounters and draws connections between “uncertain possibilities.”

Recently, Li Yaoyao has been exploring the relationship between the perception of self-imagery, particularly in terms of the body, as well as the attractive forces and tendencies of repetitive memories and future emotions. She begins with a written text, going on to conjure a dream with image and sound, building a parallel world of inner micro-movement which is triggered by perception.
